Analysis of student film opening - Scorpio productions

Analysis of student film opening – Scorpio Productions

Genre
From carefully reviewing the opening sequence of this clip I can clearly establish that it is a horror, this is due to the use of red title at the start of the clip. The colour red connotes death and this is a generic convention of a horror as it connotes that someone might get hurt or even die.

Editing
Throughout the clip there are various editing techniques used, after viewing the clip numerous times, there is definite use of Continuous editing. This allows the opening to run smoothly without having to keep cutting from scene to scene. Also, it makes it easy to follow for the audience and makes it seem like everything is in the correct order. This means it keeps things clear for the audience so that they don't get confused with what is happening within the clip.

Mise en scene
The location of the piece was set in a house, where an actor was in his bedroom. Moreover, as the sequence progressed we see what looks like the main character who looks like he is upset/depressed due to reasons that are not yet clear. We then see him talking directly to the camera and letting his feelings known, this connotes that he is trying to get the audience to understand what is going on. The props that are used are an alarm clock, pills, empty alcohol bottles along with items you would see daily such as coffee mugs. By this time we I have an understanding of why he could be depressed, it might be due to him missing someone or someone has gone missing. Therefore the empty alcohol bottles and the shot where we see him taking pills connote to us that he may be depressed due to the reason given above. The lighting that is used is low key as they are in his bedroom with the binds shut and the used of darkness connote he is depressed and sad.

Sound
Furthermore; at the start of the opening sequence we can hear the use of non-diegetic sound that is played in sync with the titles, this is good as looks very professional and realistic and also attracts the audience’s attention. Throughout the clip there is not any other sound that is from outside the clip, all we can hear is the use of dialogue, and the use of this is to build tension.

Camera/Camera Angles
In this opening there are various camera angles used. Moreover, at times the camera is considerably blurry making it hard for the audience to see what is going on an example of this is when the actor picks up a small container full of pills, the camera tries to zoom in on the pills but it is still considerably blurry but it does come back into focus. Moreover, the close up of the actors hand which had ‘Penny’ written on it was good as it showed the audience that the person on the hand was important within the piece. Some of the shots needed to be a bit longer, for example some shots displaying the titles were not long enough and resulted in the audience not being able to read what is displayed. On the other hand, I felt as though they had considered shot angles and tried to use a variety of different shots to help make their piece interesting. Also I liked the way it flowed and went from one shot to another.

Titles
the titles used are original and unique as they have incorporated them onto items they use, for example they have got a title that looks like it has been stuck onto the newspaper. This is effective as it means that the audience will feel more involved within the opening. Moreover, due to the titles being presented this way it meant that we have to look closely and pay extra attention to the sequence as you have to look out for the titles rather than seeing them already displayed visually on the screen.

Characters
In this sequence there is only one character that is played by a boy/young man . it starts off we us seeing him carrying out his daily routines e.g. waking up, brushing teeth, reading newspaper etc. I think he plays the role well and effectively makes the audience want to watch more, this is because he talks into the camera, connoting that he wants the audience to feel as involved as possible. Also the clothing he wears as good as he’s dressed in clothes that you would see of someone who is having a lazy day, often with depressed people they do not want to get washed and dressed because they have no motivation therefore what he’s wearing has been clearly thought out.
