Analysis of student film opening - The Edge

Analysis of student film opening – The edge

Genre

At the start of the film opening it is quite easy to know what the type of genre it is. I believe it is an action, this is due to the generic conventions that are displayed, for example there are guns, men in black suits and what looks like people chasing each other. Moreover, the men are wearing formal black suits which connotes like death as that’s the type of film you wear to a funeral and the fact they are chasing someone suggest they want to kill him. The features they have used for this film opening are god as they clearly show what genre it is and they help the audience understand what genre it is.

Titles

The titles used in this opening are really well displayed as they all look professional and you can clearly see they have thought about them well. Also the way they have integrated them into the clip makes the whole film opening a bit more interesting and fun to watch ad normally titles are just put anywhere within a film opening. The font that they have used also relates to the genre as the font is what you see in an action film therefore the have obviously done their research and made it look really good.

Sound

In this opening piece there was only non-diegetic sound used, the sound was in sync with the editing, this is good as it helped to build a tense feel to the film opening. The sound and editing techniques that are used all go together really well as they are in sync and match up to make the opening as good as possible.  Due to the fact they work together very well with it gives the audience a better understanding to the genre of the opening sequence they are viewing.

Camera

The opening of this clip uses many different camera shots and angles, for example at the start there is an establishing shot of their production company that looks like t has been placed on top of a building, and this shot sets the scene for the audience. After this, many of the shots are close up and in the action whereas the title ones are quite slow to allow the audience to read what it says.

Mise en scene

The costumes that are used are good as there are two men trying to chase the boy dressed in black suits, the use of black suits connotes something bad is going to happen as stereotypically men in black suits are generally associated with crime. It also showed that they were agents. The young boy who was the one being chased wore clothes that you would usually see for his age. He was wearing a hoodie, normal boy trousers and was on skates. The lighting used was rather low key, this helped the scene to look scarier, and also you tend to see this in action films to create a gloomy affect. They may have used this, as they will want to keep the audience on the edge of their seat.

Character

The characters they used in this piece have clearly been thought through as the have managed to incorporate two adults which is good as it gives the opening a more professional look. Also the way they have used the adults is good as they have made them to be the agents which fits well as it is more believable compared to making younger people fulfill these roles. Also the kid they have used was a really good choice, this is due to the fact he is good at acting mainly but also because he fits the stereotypical boy role.

Editing

The opening sequence shows that the students have used fast paced editing when the men are chasing him; this is used to create an energetic atmosphere and also creates excitement and shows it is going to be action pact. Editing is very important within a film as it helps the audience to establish what genre is it, for example fast paced editing connotes the film is going to be tense/scary ad will keep you on the edge of your seat. Whereas slow paced editing is usually used to create a relaxed atmosphere. Therefore the use of their fast paced editing is a good feature that will help the audience understand what genre it is.
