Analysis of student film - Homocide

Genre

The two genres I noticed are thriller and crime. There are connotations of the clip being a crime as there is a woman strolling through what looks like a bad area, this reflects that there could be sign of danger. Moreover, there is a scene of someone on a room where they are getting questioned, this often links to someone that has done something wrong. I can see connotations of a thriller in the clip when the two women are in the tunnel as one of the women start hitting the other attempting to injure or kill her, therefore building up tension for the viewers.

Editing

Throughout the clip there is a variety of different editing techniques being used. The first one I noticed was the use of discontinuous editing, which means they are trying to build something up to create a tense atmosphere. Also there is use of fast paced editing, this shows something bad is also going to happen. A shot reverse shot has also been used to express the emotion on the women faces to show the seriousness and anger they have.

Characters

The characters within this clip are not very well established. For example It isn't clear at first as to who woman 1 is or what she has actually done. The audience only find out this information when she attacks woman 2 in the tunnel therefore she hasn’t been clearly established. Moreover, it is also unclear who woman 2 is as there is no explanation to why she got murdered. However, on the other hand it is clear who the investigator is and what he is doing by just looking at what he is wearing, tone of his voice etc. The woman who walks into the investigation room at the end of the opening is not clearly portrayed and most people watching would think it is a random woman that has no relevance in the film.

Camera/camera angles

At the start of the clip there is a close up of a woman’s face when she is walking through something which cannot be clearly made out in which they have purposely done for effect as it builds tension for the audience. This gives the impression to the audience that she might be the person who killed them. There is also a close up of her face which creates tension in the clip. Towards the fight scene in the clip there is a close up on the woman who is attacking the other woman, this connotes to the audience who the character is.

 Mise

The use of lighting in the clip has been used correctly as you can see what is happening and when she is walks through the tunnel you can see where she is due to the good use of lighting. However I would have expected to see more use of low key lighting over the killers face to show to the audience that they are doing something wrong. The location used in the clip is effective and is realistic as they have used a council estate type of place which is stereotypically not very nice and it looks quite run down and in need of painting. This is an ideal location as you tend to see people from those type of areas commit bad crimes as they have not been brought up very well. Moreover, there is a woman and she is wearing casual clothes which is a good representative of what you would expect them to wear, however the murderer is also wearing casual clothing, this is not good use of mise as you do not see killers dressed like the public, murderers do not want to get caught therefore they usually wear something that will disguise their identity, however this is not shown in this clip.

Sound

The sound we can hear is use of non-diegetic sound which is quite mellow dramatic, this links with the genre being a crime/thriller. It also creates tension in the within the audience that one of the women may have done something wrong. The sound stays at the same pace throughout showing continuity within the clip. Furthermore, due to the fact the opening could be a crime/thriller also the opening could have such have used a slow paced piece of sound which slowly builds in order to make the tension within the audience more exciting. Moreover, there is a short conversation between the investigator and one of the women in the clip and there was music which was not good as it meant that the attention of the audience was not fully focused on what the two people were saying.

 Titles

The titles within the film opening are not as good as they could have been. For example they have not included the institutional name at the start. The titles are also not in the correct order and they are also wrongly positioned. This is shown when the director's name wasn’t placed correctly, it should always be the last credit to be shown in any film, however in this film opening it is the first name. Another piece of evidence to back up my point is that the film title should be in the middle of the main actors and the smaller actors, however in this piece all the names are placed before the film title. Moreover, the titles are also not in an appropriate font which makes the opening seem a bit amateur compared to the professional look they should have gone for
