Analysis of film opening - Children of men

Children of Men - Opening

At the start of Children of Men we see the Universal film institution logo of which has sound to it but here as you can see it is silent which is rather strange. Therefore, this could suggest a sense of death or sadness as silence usually comes with this. Furthermore, next we see a Strike advertisement which is also silent as well, this continues to add to our pre conceptions of the film. Moreover, now we can see a black screen with a voice over of a news reporter talking. This is rather quite mysterious and connotes that something bad is going to happen due to the black screen and the fact that we rarely get good news reports as they are always bad. We then get our first title which is “Universal Pictures Presents” this again gives us a pre conception that the film is going to be of a high quality.

During the main news story where we can assume the film is based around, we can see there is filming as there is a cut from the black screen to a low key lighted room which contains people who are seen to be sad and distressed. They are sitting in the room all staring at the news report. During this scene we see that not one character stands out as being the main character. Then we notice that a man walks in and is the only one that is standing above everyone else which then led me to assume that he could be the main character. This point in the film we are still sceptical to what the narrative of the film is until the point where the camera shot interchanged and then we see a floating TV. This connotes that the film could be situated in the future and so that then tells us that it could be a fantasy or sci-fi genre. When watching closely, you can see a picture of a young child with numbers saying “2009-2027”, 2027 has obviously not happened yet therefore this tells us that the now young adult dies in 2027 which consequently adds drama to the film opening and also suggests a sci-fi or fantasy genre.

Further on, the camera changes shot back to the distressed looking characters in the coffee shop. The man we perceive to be the main character is standing at the front and therefore is closer to the camera making him look larger in comparison to the other characters. This then again suggest to us that he is one of the, if not the main character and there will be a story with him in it.  Moreover, in the background we can hear a diegetic sound of a person crying which also connotes that the news is not good and it is a bad time for these people. The character that we have believed to be the main character is then tracked by the camera out of the coffee shop. Also, the fact he is the only person moving again connotes to us that he is important as he does not seem to be bothered by the news report compared to the other people.

Additionally, the camera then tracks the character to the street where the coffee shop is stationed. When the camera is tracking the character a date and location appears on the screen, it says “London, 16th November 2027”. From this it evidently confirms the location and the fact that the film is based in the future and then the camera then pans the street to connote to the audience the surroundings of where they are.

Furthermore, in the next scene the use of the camera pan gives the audience time to see the street and from this it shows the audience that it is not London as we see Tuk Tuk’s which are stereotypically associated with Indians as you see them a lot in places like India. The lighting is low key to add to the effect to show that the area is polluted and ark due to the pollution.  Furthermore, the camera soon after pans back to the main character who is walking along a dark looking street of which the camera follows him to a lamppost where he places his coffee on the floor and adds alcohol coffee. This connotes to us that he may have an alcohol addiction as he is doing this away from the public eye. In the next scene there is an explosion which straight away connotes to us that something bad is going to happen. Lastly, we then cut to a title on a black screen with white bold writing so it stands out and shows to us that it is important. This dominates the screen and non-diegetic music is played over this, this adds a dramatic effect to the scene.

Analysis of fim opening - Skyfall

Analysis of film opening - Skyfall

Genre

I am going to be analysing the film Skyfall. Firstly, after thoroughly watching the opening sequence I would say there are about two different genres that are easily noticeable. The first one is action, there are many generic conventions of action in this opening clip, for example when you look closely on Daniel Craig’s suit you can see he has a shot wound which clearly connotes that he has been shot and violence has been used.  Also, the fact that there is a cardboard cut-out of Bond with numerous gunshot holes in it with blood pouring out clearly connotes that there film is action. The next genre is thriller, this is heard at the very start and throughout by the music that is played over the top (Adele), it’s quite slow paced but has a thriller affect to it as it builds up tension.

Character

The opening sequence gives us as he audience members not much of an idea to what the characters are like.  However, from the content that is shown I can tell that there is one main character as within the first 30 seconds the name Daniel Craig appears connoting that he is the main characters as main characters always appear within that time frame. Throughout the rest of the clip there are a number of other characters that appear such as Judi Dench who I would say is also one of the main characters. In addition to this the way Daniel Craig is presented in the opening connotes that his line of work is to do with violence, this is due to the bullet holes, blood, guns etc. although he is licensed to kill due to working for the government.  Moreover, in this opening the male gaze theory has been used as you can see nude women who are dancing around, this has no relevance to the opening at all, it is just used to attract the interest of males.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere that is shown in the opening is rather relaxed and slow, this is due to the music that can be heard throughout the opening sequence. In addition to this, the use of slow paced editing connotes that this film isn’t one that is always going to have you at the edge of your seat. Also, the characters are also quite slow, adding to the slow relaxed pace of this opening.

Themes

There are numerous themes that can be drawn from this opening, the first one is death, this is due to the blood that can be seen at 0:42 pouring from the cardboard cut-out of Craig. Also, the bullet hole that is found on Daniel Craig at the very beginning whilst he looks like he is drowning. Also, towards the middle of the clip you see the camera pan through what is seen to be a graveyard, this has connotations that someone is already dead or is going to die, leading me to think that Daniel Craig might die as at the start also we see him drowning therefore if you put two and two together it makes sense that he might die.

Setting

There are various places where Skyfall was filmed. The locations are Scotland, Turkey, China and Japan. However the majority of it was filmed in England in places such as London and Surrey. The fact it was filmed mainly in England is important as It makes British Audiences want to watch it as its home grown. In addition to this, the fact it was filmed in a number of other countries attracts audiences from all over the world; therefore this will bring in revenue from all over the world also.

Sound

The first piece of non-diegetic music of Adele signing ‘Skyfall’, this creates and sets the mood for the film opening as it is quite quiet and calming. This is the only piece of music that is played. It is played throughout the clip and the way that it is sung connotes that this film could also be a thriller.

Titles

The titles are good as they are all in the correct. The main actors name appears within the first 30 seconds and also the movie title appears within the first 30 seconds. The titles are have the same font, colour and size apart from the Daniel Craig one and the Skyfall one, this connotes that them  two titles are more important. The use of the same font shows a balance throughout the clip as if you keep changing the font and colour of the titles it just looks unprofessional and dosnt look as good and sometimes it can be hard to read as you are so used to looking at one font and colour that when it changes it just looks strange.

Analysis of film opening - My best friends wedding

Analysis of film opening - My best friends wedding

Genre

After watching this opening numerous times I have become aware that there are a couple of genres that can be found in this film opening. The first one is romance, there are a lot of generic conventions of this genre that ca be found in this clip, firstly the fact all the women are wearing wedding dresses and all have a bouquet of flowers connotes that this film could be a comedy. Also the use of the pink background also suggests that it could be a romantic genre.  The next genre is comedy, this is displayed through the diegetic dialogue as the characters constantly repeat the same words and after hearing it a lot it starts to become funny due to you starting to sing along as it is catchy.

Narrative

The narrative of this film could be that there is going to be a wedding due to the wedding dresses, bouquet of flowers etc. in addition to this, the fact she catches her own bouquet connotes more than one marriage/wedding from possibly the same character, which would create a twist within the film as she might marry more than once.

Character

From viewing the opening sequence I can tell there is four characters who are all dressed like they are going to a wedding either to get married or witness someone get married. They are seen to be getting married as they are all carrying a bouquet of flowers. The characters all seem to be rather calm and relaxed and all seem exactly the same, therefore I cannot tell the difference between each one as they all act the same.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere of this film opening Is rather calm and relaxed due to the relaxed, slow paced music that is being played throughout. Also the use of slow paced acting creates a calm atmosphere for the audience. Also throughout the whole clip all the characters have the same expression on their face and it does not change, the facial expression is a smiley/happy one, this suggest to the audience they are trying to build a romantic feel for the film which will attract a wide audience as many people like watching romantic films.

Themes

Furthermore, when watching this opening sequence a number of times, there are a couple of themes that can be drawn from it. The first one is romance; this is suggested through the use of wedding dresses, bouquet of flowers, pink backgrounds, the non-diegetic music and use of the titles. The titles are in the font used on a wedding invitation therefore this connotes that there is going to be a wedding and therefore links to the fact I suggested it could be a romance. The second theme is love, this is portrayed through the use of dialogue when the characters sing “all you got to do is hold him, kiss him, and squeeze him and love him”. The quotation shows that they are telling someone what they have to do in order for a man to love them. It could also suggest that because the women who looks like the one getting married is at the front it could suggest she is the one telling the other characters what they have to do in order for their man to love them the way her man loves her

Setting

The setting of this movie is in the USA and was filmed in various places in America. This is a good location as all the actors are from different place in America therefore it makes sense to film it there. In addition to this, it creates a homely affect for the people of America as everything about that movie is American making it realistic for the viewers.

Sound

The only sound that is heard is the use of the non-diegetic music that is played throughout the opening sequence, the music creates a calm and relaxed atmosphere for the audience. Also the use of the lyrics because they are linked to the theme love it creates a romantic feel.

Titles

The titles are good as they are consistent and are all the same size, font and colour. The production company logo is seen at the very beginning and the main characters names appear within 30 seconds. The font that is used is very clever as it is the type of font you see on a wedding invitation which links perfectly with the storyline which is where someone is getting married and the best friend of that person tries their best to stop the wedding as she actually loves the person her best friend is supposed to be marrying.
To conclude, I think this opening is very good as everything links together very well, for example the storyline, titles, music and characters all link to th

Analysis of film opening – Catch me if you can

Analysis of film opening – Catch me if you can
Genre
After watching this opening sequence a few times, I have noticed that there are a couple of genres that can be found in this genre. The first one is crime, towards the middle of the opening you see what looks like two people running, it’s almost like they’re playing cops and robbers. One of them has committed the crime and the other is the cop who is chasing after him to arrest him. The second genre is drama; this is because at the start there are lots of people walking up and down, this has connotations that it could be a drama due to the fact
Narrative
From watching the opening sequence I think it’s safe to say that they storyline consists of what looks like a man is running away from another man, hence the title ‘catch me if you can’. However, the man that is being chased is constantly changing costume, this has connotations that he is constantly changing professions; maybe he is doing something illegal which means he has to keep on the move. The use of the airport connotes that he has to keep moving away which supports my theory that he is doing something illegal and in order to not get caught he has to move away from the trouble.

Character
Furthermore, the characters involved are not really anywhere to be seen this is due to the cartoon affect they have made for this opening sequence. Also the characters are blacked out meaning we cannot see what they look like. This has connotations that they are blacked out because they have something to hide just like when someone commits a crime they hide their face in order to not get caught. Moreover,
Atmosphere
The atmosphere starts off calm then music starts playing which is rather slow, this creates are slow relaxed atmosphere then more music starts to play, this music is playing to the characters footsteps, this creates quite a spooky/scary affect for the audience as this is the type of music you hear playing in a crime genre film, therefore this links to my theory that it is a crime genre. Towards the middle of the sequence the atmosphere changes dramatically in comparison to what it was like at the start. The music changes pace and it keeps going up and down, this connotes that something bad is going to happen and creates a tense atmosphere for the audience.
Themes
The first theme that I got from this sequence was criminality; this is shown through the use of music and movement of the characters. The second theme I got from this film opening was chase/manhunt this is because of the constant movement of the character and the person that keeps chasing him, this has connotations that there could be  a potential manhunt on the cards.
Setting
When viewing the sequence I get the impression it was set in all types of places this is due to the theory that he is constantly moving around from place to place as he is trying to get away from someone. The place that can be visibly seen in the opening is an airport and I know this as it looks like they are at one of the airport terminals and the a plane takes off suggesting that they are at an airport and he is trying to get away. The next place looks like a holiday destination somewhere hot, I say this because of the pool, cocktails and women that can be seen. This has connotations that his criminality is allowing him to live a lucrative lifestyle from the money he is getting.
Sound
Sound can be heard throughout the whole clip, it starts off with a non-diegetic soundtrack which is quite jazzy and builds a tense atmosphere. The music that is played is very clever; this is due to the way it’s played. For example when the characters are moving the music is played to match the footsteps which create a kind of spooky atmosphere as it connotes that someone is doing something they shouldn’t.  also when the characters start picking up the pace of their walking so does the music which is good as it means everything is  in sync.
Titles
The main characters names appear within the first 30 seconds showing that the producers have thought about the placement of them. All of the titles are either in the colour black or white depending on the colour of the background and which was is easily visible for the audience, they are also the same font and size apart from the title of the film which is a lot bigger. This highlights its importance as it shows the viewers that this is the name of the film. When the film title appears a plane appears also which is seen to drage the word ‘me’ away, this connotes that the person in the film is trying to get away from something as stereotypically a plane is used to move destinations therefore this suggests he is trying to escape something major.
